Bryony Lavery (Playwright)
Bryony Lavery is a British playwright who has written more than 20 plays, including Frozen, The Magic Toyshop, A Wedding Story, Illyria, More Light, Goliath, and The Two Marias. She was also a professor of playwrighting at Birmingham University. She has also found the time to produce for television and radio and write a number of books, including a biography of Tallulah Bankhead.
Starting out as an actress and theater administrator, she soon became fed up with playing poor parts in plays (such as the left arm of a sofa). Lavery soon decided to write better parts in plays for women, and has been able to make a living for nearly thirty years doing just that.
As her work with the Women's Movement increased and fringe theatre grew in the early 1970s, Lavery and friends, Gerard Bell and Jessica Higgs, formed a collective group, Les Oeufs Malades, which performed in small venues throughout Britain. Lavery has also been a performer and writer with many other key groups including Monstrous Regiment, Dramatrix, Theatre Centre, Clean Break, and Women's Theatre Group.
In her plays, Lavery has always demonstrated her self-described knack for never being in a situation, however tragic, where there isn't something funny. [top]
