"Director Oanh Nguyen's staging is top-notch, as are his performers... [Wayne] Lemon skillfully merges dozens of minute details to form a seriocomic mosaic."
-- Orange County Register

"Wildly inappropriate and keenly idiomatic... Detailed direction, an impressive design, and a wonderful cast!"
-- Los Angeles Times

"Oanh Nguyen's staging of the play's West Coast premiere emphasizes the interrelationships of the six characters, letting the laughs fall where they may."
-- Back Stage West

"Under [director Oanh Nguyen's] superb insight, the bawdy humor is so hysterical you'll split your sides laughing; while you're cringing inside in recognition of what's happening."
-- Stage Happenings

"With Jesus Hates Me, Chance co-founder Nguyen adds another notch on his belt of directorial triumphs, molding his cast’s three-dimensional performances and working with his design team to create a visually striking production."
-- Stage Scene LA

SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT AT SOUTH COAST REPERTORY

ADDED SHOW - Sat, Mar. 6 at 2:30pm

February 26 - March 7, 2010
Jesus Hates Me
by Wayne Lemon
Directed by Artistic Director Oanh Nguyen
Presented at South Coast Repertory's Nicholas Studio

An insightful and hilarious collision of faith and blasphemy
for those desperate to find identity, sanity, faith and freedom

Irreverent, thought-provoking dark comedy by veteran television writer Wayne Lemon (“Grace Under Fire,” “The Torkelsons”). Somewhere in South Central Texas is the “Blood of the Lamb” Miniature Golf Course. Ethan, an ex-high school football star, is desperate to find identity, sanity, faith and freedom under the gaze of a Wal-Mart mannequin transformed into Jesus on the cross at the 17th hole. Follow Ethan on an insightful, unpredictable and hilarious week as he tries to escape from his religious fanatic mother, a suicidal dishwasher, a pot-smoking cop, a beer-swillin’ good ol’ boy, possibly the love of his life, and of course the J-man himself.

This play contains graphic language, some bare flesh and a mannequin that resembles the J-Man himself!

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
South Coast Repertory is pleased to host this remounting of the Chance Theater’s acclaimed production of Jesus Hates Me. This partnership is born of an idea that began taking shape among the members of SCR’s artistic staff almost two years ago, out of a desire to make greater use of the company’s Nicholas Studio (SCR’s former Second Stage), to create stronger ties with other performing arts organizations in Orange County and to provide audiences with alternatives to SCR’s typical programming. In presenting this Chance Theater production, SCR has an opportunity to try out an idea which, if successful, may well lead to further collaborations of this kind in the future.
