On the Cripe Stage…
Based on the popular children’s book of the same name, The Secret Garden follows the story of Mary Lennox, a young British girl born and raised in Colonial India. When the 11-year-old’s parents die in a cholera outbreak, she is sent to Yorkshire to live with a reclusive uncle, his invalid son — and a host of ghosts, spirits, and lost souls inhabiting Mary’s new home. With the help of the spirits, Mary and a young gardener uncover the mystery of the manor’s magical garden, bringing life to the neglected estate as Mary’s own personality blossoms alongside the flowers. Filled with amazing music, elegant choreography, and a heartwarming story of forgiveness and renewal, The Secret Garden is the quintessential holiday musical for all ages.

I was most impressed by the sound — of each spectacular individual voice, and especially during the complicated multiple harmony sections. Mary’s parents in particular were quite operatic.

What singing!! What a good story!
Also, although my memory of the original book is that it’s written for grade-school to middle-school age children, and the principal characters are children from 10–16 or so, this retelling focuses on adults, and the effect of loss on them.
That is not a complaint, just an observation that this musical play is not written with a children’s audience in mind. I found it deeply moving and beautifully performed by the adult and child performers.
Excellent production all around, was particular impressed by the young folks in the show!
